The Book of Mistakes

She was drawing a picture of a girl when something went wrong – she certainly never meant for one eye to be larger than the other. Trying to fix that mistake, though, led to another. In fact, on every page, mistakes cropped up, from misplaced lines to accidental splats of ink. Disheartening? Maybe at first. But as she worked with her mistakes, from smears and smudges to the "frog-cow-cat thing" that didn't look at all like she planned, she created unexpected, clever, and beautiful images – and a remarkable journey for the girl in her drawing to travel. With minimal text and expressive illustrations, this inventive picture book's reminder that life rarely goes as planned and that we're all works in progress makes this an inspiring and encouraging book for day-to-day reading or as a wonderful gift book for graduates. Ages: 4 and up

A Mighty Girl Spotlight

"Shouting at the Rain" Book Giveaway

For A Mighty Girl's new giveaway, we're excited to present Shouting at the Rain, an uplifting new novel about the true meaning of family by best-selling author Lynda Mullaly Hunt! 12-year-old Delsie has always been content living with her kindhearted Grammy in her Cape Cod home. But when a school friend, who is performing in a production of "Annie," asks her "What's it like... really like... to be an orphan," she starts to wonder why she can't have a 'regular family.' And, when Delsie's best seasonal friend, Brandy, returns to her cottage for the summer hanging out with a snobby new friend who scoffs at Delsie's immaturity, her whole world starts to feel unmoored.

So when she meets snarky Ronan, a new neighbor who is known as a liar and a thief, she thinks he's just another storm on the horizon. After he stands up for her, however, Delsie discovers that behind the tough exterior, Ronan is caring and courageous but, like her, is lonely and troubled by his own losses. As they spend the summer traipsing around the island together, Delsie and Ronan explore what it means to be angry versus sad, broken versus whole, and abandoned versus loved – and discover that, with real friends and loving family by your side, you can stand strong through just about any weather.

Thanks to its publisher Penguin Young Readers, three A Mighty Girl supporters will receive an autographed copy of Shouting at the Rain, as well as copies of her best-selling middle grade novels Fish In A Tree and One For The Murphys. With apologies to our many non-US-based supporters, due to legal restrictions, the giveaway is only open to US residents. The last day to enter is Tuesday, May 7.
